What is LOLER 1998?
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) are UK law requiring all lifting equipment — cranes, forklifts, hoists, slings, and patient lifts — to be safe, regularly inspected, and fully compliant.
Key requirements:
• Strong and stable for intended loads
• Subject to thorough examination by a competent person
• Clearly marked with Safe Working Load (SWL)
• Used only in planned, supervised operations
Non-compliance risks HSE fines, prohibition notices, and operational shutdowns.

LOLER Inspection Intervals (Regulation 9)

Lifting persons (MEWPs, patient hoists) → Every 6 months
All other lifting equipment → Every 6 or 12 months*
Lifting accessories (slings, chains) → Every 6 months
New or repaired equipment → Before first use
*12 months only if risk assessment justifies and no person-carrying function.
